HOW DO I KNOW IF GENETIC TESTING IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Many patients do not realize that modern medicine has made tremendous advances in preventative care that go way beyond your typical annual blood pressure and cholesterol check. Most people are familiar with the concept that when it comes to disease both genetics and environmental/lifestyle factors both cause disease. Testing has now advanced to provide direct testing and screening to patients with certain family histories as well as personal risk factors. This type of testing can also be very informative for couples and families by making them aware of genetic conditions that they may be passing on to their children. Advances in technology have now made this type of testing even more affordable that it is now even covered by many insurance plans!! This type of testing gives our doctors the full picture when it comes to counseling you about your risks of disease in the future. After all isn't that the whole point of preventative care in the first place?
Our office offers genetic testing options to patients as part of their preventative health care services or upon request. We take the time to screen each and every patient to see if they would be a good candidate for this type of screening even before you arrive to your appointment so that we can be prepared to complete your screening in our office in just minutes. We screen for conditions where early awareness can make a difference. Because the value of DNA screening isn’t just discovering something about yourself you didn’t know before. It’s knowing so that you can make choices that are right for your life and your family. Using just a small amount of saliva or blood, we can give you access to the information stored in your DNA and, most importantly, help you understand what it means.
Included with every DNA screening is a consultation with a board-certified genetic counselor—an expert dedicated to helping you understand your results and your DNA. They’ll take the time to answer your questions and make sure you have whatever resources you need.
What does this test screen?
This type of screening provides information on your risks factors for cancers that you may inherit from your family as well as diseases that you may pass on during a pregnancy.
Cancer is more common in some families
Some of the genes we inherit from our parents are meant to protect us from certain cancers. Occasionally, we’ll inherit an irregular version of one of these genes, called a mutation. The Inherited Cancer Screen can look for irregularities in over 20 genes that could mean you’re more susceptible to developing one of these cancers at some point in your life.
We can look for a variety of conditions
The Inherited Cancer Screen can look at up to 22 specific genes associated with a risk for many different kinds of cancer―breast, ovarian, intestinal, pancreatic, prostate, thyroid, and others. Our doctors can help determine if your screen should look at all 22 genes or a specific set of genes based on your personal and family history.
Is this covered by my insurance?
This lab test is covered by most insurers and the lab that our office partners with is in network with most major carriers. They will even take the time to pre-verify your costs (if any) before your sample is run so that you are in full control.
What if I don't have insurance?
For patients who pay out of pocket we work with a specialized lab that pays attention to detail which lowers costs which means that we can offer testing for thousands less than most labs charge. Most patients that pay out of pocket do not pay more than $400 for this type of specialized testing.
