Food as Medicine: Culinary Medicine Group 2-Nutrition 101 and Knife Skills Part B

This lesson introduces patients to basic nutrition concepts, essential kitchen equipment, and basic culinary skills to execute simple food preparation.

By the end of this group, you will be able to...

  • Apply basic knife skills to food preparation

  • Apply basic knowledge of nutrition to food selection

  • Demonstrate the importance of a plant-focused diet and its impact on the planet

  • Identify benefits plants confer on health

  • Demonstrate knowledge of nutrients beyond macros: phytochemicals & fiber

This lesson introduces you to basic nutrition concepts, essential kitchen equipment, and basic culinary skills to execute simple food preparation. We have separated this lesson into two parts. Part A for the nutrition lesson and Part B for the culinary lesson.

The Culinary Medicine group visit program has been designed for current or referred patients of Crossroads ObGyn and Wellness to support patients with basic cooking skills instruction while exploring the health benefits of foods.

This program is specifically developed for patients who have been referred for lifestyle management for culinary medicine and nutrition.

Each nutrition lesson is tailored to be delivered in individual live virtual group visit so that patients can interact with the material directly with the group facilitator and doctor. Each group is led by either the physician or a member of the physician's health coaching team. Since these are shared medical visits typically they are covered by insurance similar to a one on one visit with your doctor. Each group visit is typically 45-90 minutes depending on how much material to be covered in that group.

Here's what you can expect from this culinary medicine group:

📚 Nutrition lessons to learn about different foods and their health benefits

🔪 Culinary lessons to learn about key kitchen tools and how to use them to create simple, delicious meals and snacks

🧑‍🍳 Cooking demonstrations that illustrate nutrition and culinary lessons learned [no cooking skills required - just the basics here!]

📝 Lesson-specific materials and guides to support you in applying what you have learned

🍽 Access to 1,000s of recipes so you can practice weekly skills with recipes that meet your preferences

👉 Resources to support you in building a kitchen with tools and ingredients you need to get nourishing, delicious meals to the table fast

If you are interested in participating in our culinary medicine program and you are an established patient you may call the office to book your appointment for this session. If you are a new patient we must first establish a care relationship before you start the program. If you are a new patient please schedule here.

Here’s what our patient’s have to say about the benefits of the Integrative Health Pathways Program and the changes that they have made while participating:

I just wanted to let you know that I've started on my yoga practice. Sun salutations in the morning have been fantastic, and I've also been using the app to meditate before sleep. IHP Group Participant

I completed all 3 of the yoga recommendations you assigned me. I even took it a step farther and started doing the sun salutations after watching the video 3 times. And also started doing some research into kundalini and watched videos of it to compare to other yoga types. :) IHP Group Participant

I did notice an increase in energy and had better mood stability with more of a level head. IHP Group Participant

I have been working on being more intentional these past couple of weeks. Overall, my water intake has increased because I set a reminder on my phone. I have included more plant based meals into my diet. I'm practicing Vinyasa flow and meditation at least twice a week. Also, starting Monday I'm cutting out sugar, dairy, and alcohol for at least 7 days. IHP Group Participant

This is a shared medical visit only for established patients. You do need to have had a visit with our office within the past year to participate. Dr. Kourtney is the chief facilitator of this group. If you have insurance typically group visits are covered by insurance similar to an individual visit. If you are self pay we do offer self pay rates for this type of group visit.

This month’s group is all about supporting your resolutions as we enter into the new year which is a natural time of renewal and restoration. Many times you set or establish a resolution but only end up losing your resolve in that resolution weeks sometimes days after you have established it! Sometimes your loss of resolve in your resolution has to do with other external situations compromising the time that you had previously planned and established to be in place to nurture the self. To help support our patients in their health goals in 2022 this month’s group work will have a theme of how to establish healthy boundaries so that this year you will be more successful in protecting your “me” time. This shared medical group visit will include a 20-30 minute guided meditation, group discussion of the free write exercise as well as 3 independent assignments that patients can use after the visit to help them work on the goal of establishing healthy boundaries. We will also be sharing a homemade lotion recipe that patients can customize for their use for patients that looking to switch over to a natural product to avoid endocrine system disruption. Any patient that is currently sharing a lifestyle/dietary journal as part of their treatment plan will also have that reviewed as well as part of this visit.

If you are interested in participating in this group please call our office at 832-415-0376 to schedule.
